Another climb accessible from the LOJ that goes up past Marcy Dam. This one is pretty straight forward and follows a herd path that shoots off past the dam. This peak is largely wooded but does offer some pretty great views most of the year. On our winter trip up to Tabletop, we saw absolutely nothing out of the small window – a whiteout.
We actually completed this one as a snowshoe trek on a cold February day, which is not something we would recommend. The trail and climb themselves were very manageable and pleasant, but the peak has shelves and lookouts that are basically inaccessible in the winter – this is the case for many peaks in the winter, but not all.
Our recommendation is to hit this one in the spring or fall. Avoid snow accumulation that would require snowshoes, since it will prevent you from seeing the whole peak; but if you’re determined to do it in the snow, bring spikes as well, and be prepared to switch out. Like many in this area, the difficulty and elevation gain spike once you steer off of the Marcy trail.
This one doesn’t “suck,” but it’s a tough one for me to recommend. I don’t think the peak is great and the trail isn’t much to write home about either.
I wish I had more to say about this one, but both times we were here it was for winter hikes, and I didn’t really love it either time. The lookout is weak and mostly wooded. I’ve heard it’s better in the summer, and maybe we’ll see it some day.
