Street Mountain

Nye Mountain
...The Other One...

It is not a particularly well kept secret that Street and Nye are barren, boring peaks. There isn’t a lot to this one and we aren’t going to sugar-coat any of it. This is a peak-baging situation, only take the time to summit these if you’re going for your 46er. Mt. Jo is nearby, a little shorter and a much more enjoyable climb. The good news is that this one isn’t very tough, and should make for an easy afternoon of hiking.

Views here are incredibly limited and the peaks themselves are almost entirely wooded. There is however a beautiful stream crossing about half way up, which I would consider to be the best place to stop and take your normal “peak break.” You’ll also be starting and ending at Heart Lake, which is always beautiful – a nice swim after the hike is very refreshing.

If you’re researching some hikes to do for your yearly trip to the ADK, just skip this one, you’re not going to love it. If you’re going for your 46, just bag this peak quick and go grab a beer.

  • It is still LOJ parking, and as far as I know, LOJ parking is still crazy. Just keep that in mind during your planning.
  • As mentioned this climb is not particularly difficult but I did notice trail conditions were less favorable on the second half, watch your footing.
  • The trail head is all the way back near where the Heart Lake beach is, back towards Mount Jo, completely separate from the rest of the peaks at the LOJ.

Street Mountain- 4166'

Street is slightly better than Nye in regards to views. You can sometimes see through thin woods and there is even a spot near the top where hopping up on a small boulder will offer some visibility. Neither of these peaks are particularly tough or anything, so the lack of views isn’t the most painful thing in the world.

Nye Mountain - 3895'

Another peak, like Blake, that is technically under 4K feet – Nye is another forgettable High Peak without much to offer. If you go into these knowing what to expect, with an understanding that you’re bagging the peak, it’s really not that bad.
