The MacIntyre Range apparently holds the honorable title of being the busiest and most desirable range in the entire park (containing peaks of well known names and views). We’ve summited all three peaks several times and they are almost always bustling. The good news here is that there’s plenty of space to spread out, the bad news is the trail funnels at various points and can get kind of packed. Be patient and have fun. We’ve witnessed injuries here that were the product of rushing and carelessness (and bad luck).
Although you can do them in whatever order you please we’ve always hit Wright first, stopped briefly on Algonquin, out to Iroquois, and then back to take a final sit down on Algonquin before heading out. The order doesn’t really matter, but we do think it’s kind of cool to end it on Algonquin. Marshall is also technically part of this range but is often done separately.
As far as words of advice go, this one is mostly straight forward, Iroquois is further than it looks (even though it’s not that far) and be sure not to take the turn off to Colden, that’s the wrong direction. It’s a pretty long out-and-back, but it’s mostly mild and goes fast since the peaks break it up a little bit. Parts of this path are very narrow so you might get scratched by spruce bushes, but you could always drop-pack if you wanted to. On some of our return visits of this range we’ve just skipped Iroquois, what you see from it is very similar to Algonquin
The hype for this range, to whatever extent it exists, is totally legit. Another great hike with top 10 views and a great experience overall. Every time we’ve gone up this range there has been a pretty good showing, trail stewards at the peaks, at plenty of open space and great views – we even saw a plane flying through the valley one time from Algonquin.
Even though Wright is the lowest of the three, and has the smallest peak, it’s still a great one and is usually our first stop when tackling this range. Views up towards Algonquin are spectacular, and you can even get great views of Colden and some of the other big guys. If you’re lucky and early enough, you’ll be able to chill on this one alone for a bit before the bigger groups start rolling in.
Easily one of the best High Peaks by nearly all metrics, Algonquin offers open 360 views (just like every other peak on this range) and proximity to other High Peaks that provides crisp views. Besides maybe Marcy and Haystack – there’s really nothing that compares in terms of visual spectacle, there are only a few that are this tall and this open.
Iroquois is sometimes viewed as the odd man out here, getting orphaned by some and just skipped by others. This is understandable in my opinion, not because it’s bad or anything, but because it’s very close to Algonquin and offers almost identical views. It is a great peak, regardless of all of that, and the short trip over is beautiful and mostly open face rock.
