Big Slide is one of the few High Peaks most accessible from the notorious Garden Parking Lot. This Lot can be incredibly difficult to get into, but some of the climbs from here like Big Slide and HaBaSa are highly desirable. Visitors to the John’s Brooke Lodge will regularly take up a chunk of the parking, whatever is left is up for grabs and gone by 6:00AM
Big Slide, along with The Brothers that compose the range, is a moderate climb with a few tough scrambles and tons of great views. Although none of The Brothers are High Peaks, you should treat this climb as a multi-peak trek, that is very much how it looks and feels. If we had more time for this climb, I would have spent considerably more time on each opening – the views are fantastic.
Views of the Great Range and other peaks are expectational here, particularly from Big Slide, which offers 180 views directly towards Gothics and Haystack. This range can get pretty busy and it’s worth noting that there is significantly more space on all The Brothers than there is on Big Slide Mountain.
It feels like the views from Big Slide are most exactly mirrored from those on Nippletop, staring down the Great Range from the opposite side – the views from over there are also exceptional. Seeing the descent from Gothics heading over towards HaBaSa is a pretty cool little treat. Big Slide Mountain would be an all-time great if The Garden wasn’t such a hassle.
